About Alginates
Polysaccharide Fractions
Algins are naturally occurring polysaccharides derived from brown seaweeds.
-- Alginates are heteropolysaccharides made up of mannuronic and guluronic acids. LCR Fucoidan has 40-60% alginates.
-- Alginates are non-toxic and are not reabsorbed into the rest of the body from the gastrointestinal tract.
-- Alginates do not adversely effect the body's ability to absorb calcium and other natural minerals.
Polysaccharide Extraction
Polysaccharides are extracted world-wide from many types of seaweed: agars and carrageenans come from certain red seaweeds, while alginates and fucans/fucoidan's are extracted from some brown seaweeds. Because of their size and complexity, these compounds cannot be made artificially so they have to be extracted from the cell walls of seaweeds.

When we eat seaweeds we are getting a rich supply of plant derived colloidal minerals that can be readily absorbed by the body.
Alginate Products
Alginates occur in products as diverse as wound-dressings and beer while fucans/fucoidan's are known to exhibit a range of biological activities. Many of the major advances in modern biotechnology would not have been possible without the availability of polysaccharides from seaweeds, e.g. highly refined agar (called agarose) is used extensively for cell and tissue culturing, and also in DNA fingerprinting.

Seaweed has long been used in Japan and China as a staple item of diet, recorded by Sze Teu in 600BC as "A delicacy fit for the most honored guests, even for the King himself." In Hawaii about 75 different species of seaweed have been eaten.
Seaweed is probably the only natural and renewable resource still to be fully exploited by man. This seems strange, when some history books refer to the use of seaweed by the Greeks as an animal food as early as the first Century B.C.
